The sensitivity displayed here by Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez leads us to forget the musician in favour of the bare emotion he draws forth from his own compositions or those of John Coltrane or Bernard Hermann, all of a deep, rare interiority. Jean-Sébastien Simonoviez’s music cannot be put into any neat category. Its intimacy and authenticity disturb and move us because the piano here is clearly an extension and expression of the soul.
