:rarum is ECM's inspired anthology series for which the musicians are given complete editorial freedom to choose their own favourite performances for everyone from the novice to informed and passionate fans of the label. "I decided to choose from my own bands over the years," guitarist John Abercrombie says, "as well as ongoing collectives such as the duo with Ralph Towner, the Gateway trio with Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland, and the Kenny Wheeler Quintet. I also was looking at this in a chronological way, as it seemed to put things in a perspective for me, tracing development in terms of performance and concept." It's been a 30-year journey packed with invention, from "Timeless" with Jan Hammer to "Cat'n'Mouse" with Mark Feldman and friends.
